Boules & Table Tennis in The Highams Park by Humphry’s Café

Our first booking by U3A

You can now play boules/petanque or table tennis for free in The Highams Park
Location: Next to Humphry’s Café in ‘The Highams Park’, IG8 9RB
Cost: The boules ‘terrain’ and outdoor table tennis tables will be free to use.
Opening hours: The equipment will be available during the opening hours of Humphry’s Café who will be managing the bookings. Humphry’s opening hours are between 9 am and 5pm but during the winter months it shuts at dusk. Your game will have to finish when Humphry’s closes so you can return the equipment.
Equipment: If you do not have your own set of boules or table tennis bats and balls you will be able to borrow a set from the staff at Humphry’s.

Booking: To avoid disappoint we suggest you book in advance before coming to play boules or table tennis using the online booking system accessible on the link below. Please note: Please note: there are two lanes on the boules/petanque terrain – marked A and B. They are separated by a blue rope. If you want to use both lanes you need to make two separate bookings for the same time slot.  The system will allocate lane A to the first booking and lane B to the second.

Usage Conditions:
i.) Please treat the equipment with care and return it to the staff at Humphry’s when you  have finished, so it can be logged in. Do not pass it on to the next person who has booked; as, if it goes missing or is damaged, you may be held responsible.
ii.) If you rake the surface of the boules terrain with the rake provided, please do it gently and take care not to  disturb the larger stones beneath the playing surface.
iii.) Please keep the gate shut whilst you are playing to prevent dogs entering the terrain and close the gate behind you when you have finished.

How to play Boules/Petanque: A set of rules will be provided with the boules equipment but if you want to find out how to play before you arrive, you can read the rules by clicking on this link: The rules for boules/petanque

About the Boules Terrain (sometimes called a court of a pitch)
The idea of constructing a boules/petanque terrain in the park arose during the consultations on the Highams Park Plan.

We should like to extend our grateful thanks to the volunteers from the Highams Park Snedders (HPPG’s forestry group) who designed and constructed the boules pitch. With particular thanks to Dennis Richardson who was team leader on this project; we have included a few photos below, so you can see them in action.

We should also like to say a big thank you to the Councillors of Hatch Lane and Hale End & Highams Park Ward for approving the Ward Forum funding which made this project possible by providing the lion’s share of the funding.

Some of the funding was also provided by HPPG’s project arm Highams Park Community CIC  (‘HP CIC’); you can find out more on about HP CIC on this link About HP CIC

And, last but not least, we should like to thank Toni Hanshaw and her team at Humphry’s who kept the volunteers fed and watered for free during the works.

During construction of the boules terrain the volunteers removed around 14 tons of top soil, laid the base with 9 tons of aggregate, then finished the surface with three tons of ‘petanque mix’ (6mm granite chips) and dug out around forty post holes.
