Thursday 28th November saw the welcome return of a community Christmas tree to its original home outside Hale End (Highams Park) Library.

Kindly donated by Tesco Highams Park and organised by the Highams Park Planning Group, the tree was erected by volunteers in the same spot it occupied annually until 1991.

Hundreds of people came out in the rain to celebrate the start of the festive period with mulled wine and mince pies; also donated by Tesco. The tree lights were switched on by Teddy Taylor aged 7 , and Christmas songs were performed by local choir Harmony E4.

Gordon Turpin, Chair of HPPG said “Many local residents had asked if we could have a tree in Highams Park town centre, so we spoke to the community relations team at Tesco (Bal and Cathy) who offered us great support. Hale End Library gave us permission to erect the tree and install some festive ornaments provided by local resident Dennis Richardson. We aim to¬† make this an annual event for the community and a tree for next year has already been agreed.”
