Everything that exists must be real?
An exhibition of paintings by Susan Royle at Humphry’s
19th April to 10th June 2022

Recent paintings exploring the theme of the democracy of objects and their impact on our lives.

This exhibition is part of a recent body of work scrutinising the power of ordinary, found objects. The studies are not ‘still lives’ but ‘life stilled’, a close contemplation through paint, of artefacts such as plastic waste, colourless vessels, abandoned cartons and washed up stones. Inanimate objects are given a democratic status, not overlooked but given a second look for their unique qualities and their impact in a shifting environment.

‘My paintings attempt to create a distinction between what a thing is and what qualities it possesses – a beauty which cannot easily be defined in words.
Through the interaction of the creative practice and its subsequent audience, can the true nature of an often ignored object embody a new reality?’

Susan Royle lives in Highams Park and has studios in Walthamstow and Suffolk. She is an artist, producing paintings, prints, assemblages and other related artefacts inspired by her current interest in philosophical themes. Until recently Susan was a lecturer in various colleges, universities and the Design Museum, London.
