Highams Residents’ Association (HRA) was founded in 1955 to represent residents from The Highams Estate and to preserve its historical and architectural character from indiscriminate development.
Membership to Highams Residents’ Association is open to all residents in Crealock Grove, Henry’s Avenue, Keynsham Avenue, Lichfield Road, Marion Grove, Mason Road, Montalt Road, Nesta Road, Tamworth Avenue, and The Charter Road.
The Highams Estate was developed in the 1930s by the Warner Estate Company. The London Borough of Waltham Forest recognised its architectural and historical value in 1988 when it was awarded Area of Special Character status. Then in 2020, an Article 4 direction was put in place to retain architectural features and ensure any changes consider their surroundings.
In 1961, after removing 176 prefabricated bungalows on the open space that the Warner family didn’t develop, it was sold to Walthamstow Council. The HRA successfully persuaded them to restore the land for public use as a park. This is now The Highams Park.
In 1983, Sir Henry Warner gifted HRA the ransom strip along the perimeter of Woodford County High School for Girls, adjacent to The Charter Road, and a strip of land between Woodford Rugby Club grounds at the bottom end of Nesta Road. This gives residents control over two large undeveloped green areas, which help contribute to the area’s character.
