Starting up a business is seen to be one of the toughest things you can do. Opening one in 2020 could be seen as outright insanity. However, that’s where The Stag & Lantern Micropub found themselves when they prepared to open last year.
The project started back in 2018 by Highams Park resident Robert Woodland. Robert loved the village-like community of the area, but felt there was a lack of relaxed, sociable places to meet and drink quality beverages; in keeping with the area.
Having visited various micropubs throughout the UK, he saw a perfect opportunity for Highams Park, and begun work.
The micropub was originally planned to open late Spring 2020; once planning permissions had been approved by residents with overwhelming support. However, the ensuing pandemic meant a very stop-start opening. With doors having been closed since November 2020, the relaxation of restrictions in April has brought cautious optimism back to the business.
So, what is a micropub? Simply put, a small, social-focused pub, usually situated in a previous shop front, with a focus on great beer and serving the even greater community.
What does the future hold? Firstly, the hope for the business is to get back to some sense of normality and start trading. After that, Rob hopes to begin implementing more social events as the rules continue to relax.
This includes beer-festivals, tasting events, and meet the brewer showcases.
The venue also has a live music licence that it hopes to be able to start utilising at some point in 2021.
For now though, The Stag & Lantern are happy to simply be back open and serve the wonderful Highams Park community.
The Stag & Lantern is at 11-12 The Broadway, Highams Park, London E4 9LQ
