100 Years of The Greek Theatre in Walthamstow
The Greek Theatre in Walthamstow was opened 100 years ago this summer.
It was built in the grounds of Walthamstow School for Girls during 1924 by
unemployed men of the borough. It was a part of the public works programme
aimed at relieving the terrible depression that followed the First World War.
Most such works involved infrastructure maintenance or new lidos. In fact,
the original proposal was for a swimming pool. Mary Norris, the incoming
Headmistress, argued for a theatre instead.
The Greek Theatre Players was founded in 1958 but can trace its roots back to
the 1920s and the original Old Girls Drama Society. The company is a loose col-
lective of local actors, technicians and directors who come together each year to
mount the production.
