Highams Park will be the centre a three-month programme of live music this summer, running from July-September, linking local musicians and music organisations to local independent al-fresco businesses in the town centre, providing a summer-season of outdoor music pop-ups, events and happenings.

The programme is part of the GLA (Greater London Authority) Summer Streets initiative and is being developed in partnership between local community organisations, including HPPG, and the Waltham Forest Regeneration team.

Programme aims:

  • Supporting local businesses, raising awareness and increasing customer footfall
  • Creating opportunities for live music
  • Supporting local musicians and music organisations
  • Positioning Highams Park as a destination for eating and entertainment

Opportunities for musicians

There are several example opportunities described below, though the programme is flexible and open to fresh ideas and approaches:

  • Performances linked to businesses: this can be either day or night-time performances, providing entertainment to customers, passers-by and the wider public. Suited to paid professional and semi-professional musicians, who can provide, for example, two sets of 30-45 minutes
  • Pop-up performances linked to local businesses: more relaxed, shorter, pop-up performances designed to provide entertainment and enjoyment for customers using outdoor seating as well as for the wider public, creating a buzz and drawing attention to the business
  • Busking style pop-ups (no power required): like the above without the requirement for advanced publicity, creating town centre buzz, customer enjoyment and opportunities for musicians
  • Roaming musicians: this opportunity suits musicians who are mobile and able to either stop and play (as opportunities present themselves) or play whilst on the move between key venues
  • Events: there will be several events linked to al-fresco businesses, providing opportunities for multiple acts, from short two song opportunities to longer sets
  • Sound engineers: able to support events, such as PA provision, sound/stage management or compering
  • Volunteer opportunities: all the above opportunities will be greatly enhanced by support from local volunteers, helping with a wide variety of roles, including stewarding, equipment set-up, crowd engagement and much more
